PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear AFP members,

Happy November! What a month we had in October. Even with our countries economic woes and the Presidential election minutes away, we had the pleasure of working with the Center for Non-profit Excellence to bring Lynn Twist to Albuquerque. For those members that were there, I'm sure you agree it was a truly memorable experience. Lynn motivated us and encouraged us to continue fundraising in these difficult times. She reminded us that fundraising is even more important to our communities now than before. It was great to be so energized to our role as ‘change agents’ that’s who we are, and what a noble profession we have! Our work is at the core of what our organizations do, without the ‘ask’ that we make and the noble act of love from our donors, the work couldn't get done. So if you were unable attend and haven't read her book "The Soul of Money," pick it up for great fall reading, it will renew and excite you and your commitment to our profession.

I also had the pleasure of attending the AFP National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. We reviewed the results of the membership survey that went out in July 2008 and it provided some great data on what you as members want and need from AFP. The top three issues for members were; to make the National website more user friendly, to lower dues and make AFP trainings more affordable. I'm excited to report that AFP National has created working groups to address those issues and that the web-site is being revamped as we speak. I also had the opportunity to participate in training sessions that will help make the New Mexico Chapter even better. Please let us know if there is something we could provide to support your fundraising role in the community - we are at your service.

The International conference in New Orleans is going to be spectacular. New Orleans will be in full “swing” March 29 through April 1, 2009, when 4,500-plus fundraisers come marching into town. With more than 150 sessions in 20 different areas of concentration, no aspect of fundraising will be overlooked. There is something for everyone, at every level at this conference, if you are just beginning or want to expand your knowledge; this is the place to be! Get all the details at http://conference.afpnet.org/.

Last but not least, we hope to see you at our National Philanthropy Day celebration on November 12th. If you haven't made reservations, please make them soon. It is the one opportunity we have each year to bring fundraisers, funders, donors, organizations and the community together to celebrate the Spirit of Philanthropy. This year we have added a special opportunity for any organization to celebrate/nominate someone that has embraced the "Spirit of Philanthropy" and will be recognized with an award in this year's program.

I want to leave you with a quote from Lynne Twist...

“When you let go of trying to get more of what you really don't need -
Which is what we are always trying to get more of -
An enormous amount of energy is freed up to make a difference with what you have.
When you make a difference with what you have - it expands.”

Happy Fall Fundraising,

Felicia Griffin
President

AFP December Luncheon - Thursday, December 11th
Jan Hosea, the winner of the Outstanding Fundraising Professional award at Albuquerque’s National Philanthropy Day, will be the guest speaker for the December 11 AFP monthly luncheon. The Program Committee has invited Jan to speak to some very specific issues about her exceptional qualifications and experiences. She will talk about her commitment to the profession through certifications, publications, volunteering in the community, and involvement in professional fundraising organizations. Jan will also discuss how she has been mentored and is a mentor for her fellow fundraisers. Jan has much to share with us so plan on joining AFP at the Embassy Suites on December 11 for our lunch.

AFP December Audio Conference - Wednesday, December 10th
Paula K. Parrish, CFRE, will present “Guerilla Tactics: Motivating Your Board and CEO to Raise More Money.” The enduring reality of fundraising for nonprofit organizations is the need for the board to help with the solicitations. They might be reluctant, reticent, or resistant, but the bottom line is that they must DO IT. So how does a development officer persuade board members to assist? Using guerilla tactics! These include much personal contact, putting books into their hands through executive summaries, weekly task assignments and committee-driven goal setting, among other tactics. If they have fiduciary responsibility and you demonstrate the needs, they will follow your lead.
